Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"To infinity and beyond" - Buzz Lightyear. Though this is a favorite saying by a beloved animated character, it is my motivation in inspiring my students, most who are limited in their language, in becoming our future scientists, astronauts, explorers and space engineers.

At our school, we believe in helping students work towards their utmost potential.

We are working towards becoming a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) academy for next year. Our students are excited and motivated when entering our hallways, because they know something exciting, innovative and inspirational is always waiting around the corner. Eighty seven percent of our students are on free and reduced lunch. Most of them come from other countries with only their native language to help them communicate. Many have to learn English by being immersed in our culture and most have the responsibility of being translators for their parents and guardians regarding what they are learning in class, as well as, surviving in a "new" country. But that doesn't stop them from wanting to learn and what better way to do this, as their teacher, than to show them the world, the universe, and all they can aspire to be and discover!

My Project

Imagine, being a "commander" in charge of your own spaceship mission, sitting at your station, waiting for directions from your "capcom"and together, with your pilot, ensuring that your mission is accomplished and all on board have traveled to space and beyond, and have arrived safely back to earth. Or even better, actually participating, as a team, in a launch countdown. Using the software KLASS from NASA, students will participate in this and so much more. They will create their own mission patches and team names, like real astronauts. They will engage in activities that are career oriented and hands-on, bringing the real world of Space into the classroom. The excitement of launching a Space shuttle and participating in the decision making process, like real NASA engineers and astronauts, will enable my students to learn how to work as a team, become problem solvers, and most importantly feel a sense of pride in the accomplishment of "lift-off" and a "GO FOR LAUNCH!!!"

After having the privilege of attending the Honeywell Space Academy for Educators 2 years ago, I knew that I had to share this experience with my students.

As a result of your donation, my students will be able to experience, first hand, what it's like to sit behind a "space station" and work together in accomplishing the common goal of launching a space shuttle. If it touches the heart of one student to go to "infinity and beyond", then I know my own mission has been successful!!!
