Glowing Bacteria to Teach DNA to Immigrant Students
My project needs the Carolina Purification of Green Fluorescent Protein Kit to transform ordinary bacteria into glowing bacteria.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Wolf's classroom raised $294

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 9th and 10th grade biology to 75 English Language Learners (ELLs) at Flushing International High School (FIHS) in Flushing, New York. FIHS is an empowerment school in its fourth year that serves only immigrant students with less than 2 years of education in English. As a result, the entire population of the school are ELLs. As a member of the Internationals Network of Schools, our mission is to teach English in context of the subject area courses. Students learn English and complete their high school requirements simultaneously. At our school, students engage in experiential, interdisciplinary group projects and hands-on learning so as to create shared experiences that help all levels of students learn complex content, communication skills, and language. One result of this approach is a graduation rate at International Schools that is almost 3 times the New York City average for ELL students.
To be competitive in medical and biological science careers, students must be versed in DNA and its application in biotechnology. The best way to learn is by doing, which is why I want to take time to observe a concept such as DNA and make it come alive. The bacterial transformation with green fluorescent protein is one of the most striking experiments students can do to understand the function of DNA. It is a truly magical scientific moment when a student realizes that they created a glowing green bacteria. It is an experience that can motivate the pursuit of science as a career.
Biotechnology one of the most exciting careers in science. It is transforming medicine by illuminating the genetic basis of disease, as well as creating ethical dilemmas through the use of genetically modified foods. Biotechnology is becoming the norm in high school classrooms across the country, yet remains outside of the budget of our school. Your funding will help make this important frontier of science real for our students, opening to them the possibilities of careers in medicine, science, and policy.
Your financial help will provide a memorable experience for a group of wonderfully eager and hard-working students, helping them achieve their own American Dream. Thank you so much for your help.
