Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are taking Principles of STEM, Robotics, and attending an after school STEM program. Although my students come from a variety of backgrounds, including a large portion of socioeconomically disadvantaged students, the hands-on experience keeps them engaged and learning.

One of my goals as a STEM educator is to integrate the STEM field throughout various topics of study.

This involves looking at how STEM impacts other areas of life: history, civics, art, antibullying, social emotional well being, etc. In order to minimize the effects of social distancing, we are looking for ways to keep my students engaged in real world applications of STEM.

The STEM field is largely geared towards men, so it is my desire to create an environment that encourages young women to be involved with and successful in STEM. Through innovative projects and STEM awareness, I am hoping to balance the ratio of male to female students in STEM fields. Also, with such a high percentage of EL students and low socioeconomic students, laboratory experience and hands-on learning is an excellent way to enrich their education.

My Project

The Glowforge is a phenomenal laser cutter that can cut and engrave a variety of materials. A laser cutter and engraver is a high precision machine that uses carbon dioxide gas to cut through low density materials like wood, acrylic, and some plastics. The power and speed can also be lowered to engrave images onto the surface of those materials. The applications of these lasers are endless, and with a growing market for MakerSpaces, this laser is sure to peak the interest and engagement of my students. This is also a great way for students to show off the Art in STEAM as they design, cut, and engrave various art projects! Students can design their art projects on computers or on the material and have them laser engraved!

During the COVID19 Pandemic, laser cutters can be used to make face shields for hospitals in desperate need of supplies.

This would be a great hands on projects where students can see a need and fill it. When COVID first struck the US, there was a great need for face shields. This project would encourage students to enter the engineering design process to make their own face shield prototype that could be used in the real world. Additionally, robotics students can use the laser cutter for cutting parts out for robotic arms and vehicles.
