As an educator in Northwest Montana, on the edge of the Flathead Indian Reservation, in a low income, high poverty, and transient town I see all sorts of students come and go. It is heartbreaking to see students make friendships and then have to leave as fast as they got to town.
The students that have been chosen to participate in this years GLE 2018 are some of the brightest and well-rounded students I have had the pleasure of teaching and learning from.
Our small community is largely a farming and ranching community. Most, if not all of the students, have never left the state, let alone the reservation. But due to the type of lifestyles they live, there is a strong work ethic that each of these students has, instilled in them by family. This amalgamation of students comes from different walks of life, yet find a common ground and goal in the effort to achieve more than anyone in their families has before.
Because our school is not large, some classrooms having only 2 -3 students, this opportunity to further their education and bring back what they learn to their peers, is amazing.
My Project
The students that were chosen for this trip will gain valuable life experience traveling to Ireland and seeing parts of the world that they might never get a chance to see. They will also make friendships with other students from around the globe.
By participating in the GLE, these students will gain leadership abilities and confidence in themselves.
They will be able to bring back research that they learned about from NASA scientists to their school and community. Along with working alongside scientists, these students will work with peers from around the world. Learning about projects that were completed by those students and their teachers. They will get to share their projects with those students as well.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
