My Students

This is my very first year as a high school Earth Science teacher. Most of the students in my school come from low-income backgrounds. A lot of these students include new immigrants coming from a range of countries. The school serves West Indian, Russian, Arab, South Asian, Dominican, Puerto Rican, and African immigrants, as well as long-established African American families. As their teacher, I would like the opportunity to make my classroom as culturally inclusive as possible.

A teacher from insideschools.org made the following comment about the school I am working in:

"Many 9th graders arrive with weak reading skills and some teens miss more than 18 days of school. New immigrants face unique challenges."

Moreover, a student also commented:

"I like this school. Current freshmen. The students here are very diverse, the high achieving students do good but low achieving ones do terrible which ruins it for the good students."

Since the students in my school come from so many backgrounds and education levels, I want to invest in classroom resources that will make sure that the unique educational needs and learning styles of my diverse group of students are addressed and used as their superpower.

My Project

I like to have a set of large whiteboards as well as small whiteboards in the classroom. A lot of students are too shy to raise their hands to answer questions during the class. Giving each student a small whiteboard can give them the opportunity to write down their answers and hold them up for the teacher to see. The large whiteboards are helpful for group activities so students can work together to draw out what they learned in the classroom. It will help them visualize what they learned and discuss concepts with each other.

I also want my special needs students to have access to stress balls and other anxiety-reducing materials in the classroom.

The call bell will help me get the students' attention. The popsicle sticks are a fun way to pick students to answer questions or do activities.

Hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and masks are essential to creating a safe classroom environment for my students.
