Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hello! My students are bright, funny, energetic, amazing children with special needs. They all bring something unique and beautiful to the table and are so fun to be around. These kids bring so much light to our staff whether it be by telling us knock-knock jokes, giving us a hug when we need it the most, or showing us their latest dance moves! We are so proud of the way that they've overcome the obstacles that may come along with having special needs. We have huge celebrations for achieving skills that may seem minor to others, but mean the world to our children, their families, and our staff. We work hard to make these goals achievable by creating a learning environment that uniquely matches the needs and personalities of our wonderful students. Unfortunately, our school receives very little funding and we need help to achieve our goals.

My Project

Hello,

Our kids have diagnoses such as Autism and Down Syndrome; Some of our students are nonverbal (unable to speak verbally), therefore they have no way to communicate their needs, comment, ask questions, answer questions, etc.

This lack of communication also limits their ability to engage in class lessons to their full capacity.

To address these communication needs, Speech therapists introduce Augmentative and Alternate Communication which is why we need the iPad. There are communication apps on the iPad that allow students to press pictures and produce words and sentences with the iPad as their voice. This has shown so much success as our students who communicate with iPads tend to become more involved in class lessons and increase their socialization with adults and peers.

If you fund this iPad, it will allow me to teach my students how to use specific communication applications and then put them through the evaluation process to get approved for their very own iPad! I have previously been using my personal device, however it is no longer working and I need a new way to teach my students.

Thank you in advance for your care and support!
