My Project

My students are all unique and special each having different ways of communicating. While they are all communicators of some form, some need extra support to express wants, needs, knowledge, and social interactions. Having the ability to communicate effectively is often taken for granted, but it plays a vital part in the overall development of students, especially those with different abilities.

AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) includes a variety of communication ways other than speaking.

Currently, iPads have communication apps available that are used as a way to communicate through the use of pictures/symbols and speech output allowing a child to have greater autonomy and use of "their voice". These programs are customizable allowing a wide range of learners to communicate at their current abilities and can grow as they do!

This iPad will be used exclusively as an AAC device for my students that currently communicate in ways other than speaking. While the school district does provide evaluations and devices for individual students, the process is very slow and the students go without a way to communicate effectively for a long time. Having an iPad will allow me to give communication access to those students that need it the most until they are evaluated and given a device that is added to their IEP (Individual Education Plan). As I strive to be a provider that focuses on equity, providing a voice to those that do not have one is my top priority. The iPad will be a tool that will help me to provide equity and a voice to those that need it the most!
