Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from a wide range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Some know four languages. Some have learning disabilities that affect speech and language, fine and gross motor, and social-emotional abilities.

All have diverse learning experiences and the teachers on our grade level want to ensure that all of our students have equal access to learning basic concepts in literacy, science, writing, and other academic areas.

We want them to ask questions, ones that lead to more questions to make them explore and wonder, and grow as learners. To encourage them to to become active learners, we want to promote meeting Positive Behavior Intervention System expectations through tangible acknowledgements. Towards that end, I want to be able to get our students to visit a center for air and space exploration to experience astronaut life in orbit . This will motivate them to remain positive and productive during this difficult time. Moreover, hands on resources that encourage a love of learning are a huge necessity.

My Project

Students will be able to test out various media to see which ones will actually contribute to a successful flight. They will learn the scientific process of creating a hypothesis and trying out different means to achieve a result. In the interim, they will be reading and visiting The NYC Center for Aerospace and Applied Mathematics , (NYCCAAM) increasing students' interest and excitement about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through space and aviation science. Hands-on activities simulate real world experiences where students apply science and math concepts learned in the classroom to work together to solve authentic problems.
