Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a New York public elementary school that serves a diversity of learners. In our school, the populations of students vary greatly with students who receive special education services, students who are gifted and talented, and students who are on the Autism Spectrum. There are a number of learning styles that are represented by our school and especially in our classroom!

The future first-grade students in my classroom are individuals in so many ways.

The students coming into our classroom this year come from different ethnic and racial backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses and familial backgrounds.

My Project

When I began teaching first grade, I saw the power of picture books blossom right before my eyes. One of my favorite parts of the day was gathering my students together on the carpet for a read aloud, especially if it was with a picture book. Having the time for read-alouds several times a week allowed for so many rich opportunities for the students and myself alike.

Having picture books for read-alouds is the ultimate resource in our classroom.

With books like "The Right One for Roderic;" " The Fruit Salad Friend: Recipe for A True Friend;" and "Being Edie Is Hard Today," my students and I will be able to engage in meaningful conversations about being a good friend, dealing with hard emotions, and being an individual. These lessons are so important for the little learners to be exposed to at an early age.

In addition to allowing for opportunities to use these books to conduct social-emotional learning in the classroom, the books purchased through this project will allow for my first-graders to learn about their city, develop a love for literature through entertaining and funny books, and support literacy skills as they develop their identity as readers.
