Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Picture this. Students working diligently brainstorming, drafting, and editing, pieces of writing that tell their story, expressing personal experiences. Now imagine those same children publishing those same pieces like real writers! For children who already have so little, let's give them a voice!

My students are first graders living in the Bronx in New York.

They are thoughtful, creative, and each have a precious story to share. My class is made up of both general education and special education students as well as English Language Learners. These children are curious about the world around them, are eager to learn more, and are itching to have their voices heard. However, many times these desires are stifled because they attend a Title 1 school and live and a neighborhood of high poverty. It's difficult for parents to buy clothing and school supplies, let alone technology with which they can engage.

My Project

During Writer's Workshop, the children engage in the writing process, brainstorming ideas, planning a story and/or personal narrative, drafting and editing their work. Because of the hard work students put into their stories and because of how badly they want their stories to be read, it would be such a celebration if the students were able to type their stories as part of their publishing process, just like real writers!

I want my students to feel like what they have to say is important and worthy of being read and reread.

Tb being able to type and publish their work, they will be able to share their stories and experiences. Ultimately, I hope that they will feel proud and valued as writers!
