My Students

I am a 2nd grade Special Education Teacher in Brooklyn, NY. My school is an Early Childhood Center that ranges from Pre-K to Grade 2. We are a Title I school with a large population of English Language Learners. The staff at our school pride ourselves on creating a love of learning in young children so they may carry it with them throughout their lives.

The students in my class have been diagnosed with disabilities such as speech and language disorders, learning disabilities, and delays in motor skills.

They have several different learning styles and it is often a challenge to meet the specific needs of each and every child.

My Project

While their disabilities may be different, I often notice that the students I teach all benefit from hands-on learning opportunities in the area of mathematics. Allowing them to use manipulatives during math lessons can create a better understanding of new concepts and solidify knowledge of old ones. Math manipulatives also create many opportunities for speaking to classmates in small groups, which would greatly benefit my students who have language delays. Additionally, working with these objects will allow for practice in fine motor skills, which is needed to help my young students who have weak muscles in their fingers and hands. The math based manipulatives in the kits would not only teach new math concepts, but act as another form of therapy for my students with special needs. I believe the best way to teach math is to allow the students to work problems out on their own and have fun with it. A donation of hands-on math activities would create such opportunities for the students in my second grade class. Thank You.
