This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a Title I school in a highly transient area of a military town. My students are all second and third graders in a neighborhood that struggles economically. Nearly one hundred percent of our students qualify for free lunch and breakfast. That, however, does not diminish their enthusiasm for learning, especially when it relates to things they are passionate about!
Our student population has become increasingly diverse in recent years.
They are smart and very capable students with a true love of learning through real experiences. The economic challenges do, however, have an impact on what they have available to help them learn. These are changing times, and we have to constantly look for new ways to keep students engaged and build skills that will prepare them for potential careers.
My Project
As an elementary librarian, I try to have a collection that has something for everyone! Our students are all unique and so are their reading levels and interests. As we continue to circulate books to our students both virtual and in person, I want them to be able to search our library catalog for titles that speak to them.
This project will provide titles that will spark the interest of both our face to face students and distance learners to pick up a book and take a look.
Our school division has shifted the focus from teacher directed instruction to student voice and choice activities to engage our learners. By appealing to student interests we can hopefully develop lifelong learners who will enjoy leisure reading as an recreational activity throughout adulthood!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
