I work in a very low income area with students with multiple disabilities. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class reads at a kindergarten grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. 90% of our students are African American or Latino. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. Our classrooms are dilapidated, technology starved, outdated and nonexistent. Special Education Teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in Science, Math, English, History and Technology without the right tools to teach our students.
My Project
I am requesting the gift of books and books on tape for my Special needs students. We are in a very low income area, some kids will only see books at school. Can we please make reading exciting for them. Some of my emotionally disturbed students use books as a escape. I want to allow them to go on a vacation in their minds.
My students with spectrum disorder have a hard time reading and would be so happy with books with puppets.
This way they can be acted out with puppets instead of just words. I can't wait to watch them see books come to life!
