My Students

We have a few mottos in our class, but one of my favorites is, "First we learn to read, then we read to learn!" There's nothing better than the smile of pride on a child's face when they realized that they have learned to use reading strategies that help them move up to the next reading level.

My students have been with me since Kindergarten because I was fortunate enough to be able to loop with them and stay their teacher for first grade as well.

I am enjoying being able to watch them grow academically and socially. Our school is a Pre-K to 5th grade school in a wonderful community with a diverse population of working class families. We make many efforts to create a welcoming school and a fun and happy learning environment where the children enjoy coming to school every day.

My Project

Each student reads books every day that are at their own individual reading level. As they learn new sight words and apply reading strategies to their books, they are able to progress to higher reading level books. In first grade we see the children move from reading a level D or E book in September to reading a level J or K book by June. The books that I am hoping to get will fill up my baskets of leveled library books that are new and exciting for the children to read.

Each year we begin with brand new school supplies, but not with new books for our libraries.

New folders, pencils, notebooks but the books in our leveled library baskets look far from new and are less exciting because of their years of use. Our "book hospital" has been very busy this year. I think having new books will motivate the students to want to read more every day.
