My Students

Neil Gaiman once said, "A books is a dream that you hold in your hand." I find that some of my most reluctant students will respond to reading if they are able to choose their own books.

My students come from all 5 boroughs of New York City and all varying family and educational backgrounds.

Although we always have class texts we are reading and analyzing together, I feel it is important to reinforce the value of reading for pleasure and reading constantly. While they are not in my class, I expect them to be reading on their own, and that is why having exciting, high-interest titles help to ensure that my students will in fact read on their own.

My Project

My students read twice a week in class as part of an independent reading program (25 minutes increments), and they also must finish at least 5 books by the end of the semester. By having students read more words than their peers, this helps them catch up and overcome some significant deficits in reading that they come to me with. The books I am requesting cover a variety of subjects-- from sports, to biography to fiction. Through exposing my students to a wide array of authors and stories, I can help them understand both reading, as well as the world better. The independent reading program will help them make vast gains in their reading levels, as well as help them to make connections, set goals, and understand people and places unlike anything they've ever been exposed to.

I rely on the generosity of donors across America who care about our youth and the education they receive.

A great education starts with great teaching and adequate resources. Donors Choose allows me to stock my classroom with a rich variety of books, a resource my students deserve. I thank you in advance for caring about my classroom and my kids.
