My Project

This is my second year teaching 9th grade RLA in a small, rural community in Texas. Sadly, many small schools in our area do not have the funds for librarians. I am trying to offer my students a wide variety of novels to help improve their reading comprehension. We have come together as an English department to require all students read self-selected novels all year long. The few books we do have remaining in our library are spread very thinly through all students in our high school. I have spent many hours researching high interest novels for my students. It is so hard to compete with the world wide web and the instant gratifications that comes with it. Research has shown that if we educators can get our students to read anything, we will see a huge increase in reading fluency (plus, higher scores on our state standardized tests). Please, help me give my students the same opportunities and choices to select novels that many students benefit from in larger schools with unlimited funds.
