My Students

I have an amazing group of responsible, dedicated high school students. We are a Title One school in a low-income urban community. This year, we offered AP Computer Science for the first time, finally giving our seniors access to the computer literacy that is increasingly required in our digital age.

We closed schools due to COVID-19, but my students have persevered through incredibly difficult circumstances to continue their education online.

They are sharing one device among their siblings, juggling childcare responsibilities and a full time school load, trying to find a quiet place to complete their coursework, and dealing with the mental burden of financial uncertainty for themselves and their families. Additionally, many of my students' family members are essential workers, so they are either worrying about increased risk of infection or caring for sick family members.

My students have shown incredible commitment to learning during these times. I just want to make sure that they have the resources to keep it up next year. I am so proud to be their teacher.

My Project

Our graduating seniors are dealing with so much uncertainty as they start college. Will they be on campus or at home? What will school look like next fall? Will they have the resources to be successful, even if they have to study from home? In March, many seniors borrowed chromebooks from our school for distance learning, which they must return before they start college. Additionally, a lot of students share one computer with their siblings. As my students' families struggle financially with layoffs and budget cuts, being able to afford a laptop is a huge challenge.

Our grads are facing a lot of unknowns in the fall - but we do know that they will need laptops to access their college coursework.

Help support our 2020 grads so they can succeed next year, whether they are on campus or at home. Ensure that our grads can continue their Computer Science and STEM education. This lasting investment will give our students an essential tool they can use throughout their college career.
