This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a speech-language pathologist, in a special education school in the South Bronx area of New York City, my colleagues and I service over 150 students weekly. Many of our students, who have a wide range of developmental disabilities, are extremely motivated to learn more and expand their language skills. Majority of our students are non-verbal or have limited verbal skills and require alternate means of communication. This makes it more challenging for them to express their wants and needs.

Our goal as speech therapists is to give all of our students a voice.

We work continuously with our students on a daily basis to improve their lives, as well as their families. The students we nurture mean the world to us, as we go above and beyond to help improve their language skills. Our students have a difficult time interacting with their peers, teachers, friends, and family members. My colleagues and I strive to help our students thrive in a world that was not designed for them.

My Project

While working in a special education school, in a low-income community in the Bronx, it often becomes hard to provide our students with proper tools to communicate. Before any of our students can receive a device that will be with them 24/7, we as speech therapists must prove, with data, that the child is device ready and is able to be assessed for a device. Unfortunately, many of our students don't have experience using a device or a program that will help give them a voice. As eager as we are to help our students gain experience using a device, we simply don't have the means to help them.

Having access to iPads with the proper programmatic software, such as Proloquo2go or LAMP words for life as well as other programs, will help our students prosper and gain their voice, which is vital for an improved quality of life.

Access to a device facilitates different forms of communication and can help to decrease any negative behaviors that may result from the inability to express their wants, needs, thoughts, and feelings. Helping our students to communicate and have a voice of their own is the most powerful tool that one can ever give. We are asking for your support to help our students in need. Every child deserves a voice and with your help we make this possible.
