Give Award Winning Comics a Place on the ELA Shelf!

My students need a variety of reading materials that show them the power of the written word. Recently in an NPR article, Glen Weldon writes about how these once belittled comics are now winning awards!

My Students

Many of my students are first generation immigrants from around the world. They believe strongly in the value of a good education and try their best every day in my school. They want to be readers and know that being a good reader is important for success in life.

This year I have been astonished by the reading community we have managed to build together with very little resources.

With your help, our reading community with continue to grow by placing engaging texts in my class library and into the hands of my students.

My Project

This project will allow my students to study a new medium in art and literacy: the graphic novel/comic. Once this genre was belittled in the teaching community as a genre only to be used with our "reluctant readers," however; comics nowadays are competing with the traditional young adult lit genre.

In an increasing visual society, comics will allow students to understand historical and cultural perspectives in the complex manner with which they were intended.

This project will enrich the reading experiences of my students regardless of their Lexile score and enhance their critical thinking abilities to decipher history's themes during the Civil Rights Movement, Iranian Revolution and more!
