My Students

The students I will be teaching in September are a unique bunch! Next year, more than ten percent of the students that will be coming to my English Language Arts class speak no English at all, having newly arrived here from Asia and the Middle East. They will be learning alongside native English speakers who are working to secure coveted spots in the competitive New York City specialized high schools. It's going to be more important than ever to really differentiate my instruction to try to engage all of these kids!

My Project

Research has shown that to grow as readers, students should be reading at home for at least 30 minutes a night. But most of my students don't get out of school until the local library has closed.

A good book can make a real difference; I love the way students react to learning that a new book has entered our library.

I have selected books that are particularly relevant to the diverse life experiences of my population. Please help me give them books with characters they can truly relate to.

Students have will have time in class to browse and borrow from our newly enriched library, and I plan to show a book trailer for each one.
