Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in the low-income community of South Gate, a neighborhood outside Los Angeles, CA. During the school year, I am able to provide my students with books through my classroom library and through the local public libraries. My students love reading and are always excited to get their hands on new books. However, due to the pandemic, I am unable to get into my classroom to select the books for students, and they are unable to go to the public library. Thus, many of my students are left without access to books at all.

While in previous years, I was able to prepare summer learning packets for my students that included new, high-interest books that we purchased as a class, but because of COVID-19, I am not able to do this for my current students.

Thus, the students with the greatest needs are being impacted the most by not having access to books.

My Project

My students' worlds became so much smaller as of March 13 due to COVID-19. For many of them, being confined to their homes means a lack of access to any resources, including books. Bookstores are closed. Public libraries are closed. Classroom libraries are closed.

But by giving a kid a book, we can open the world to them.

By funding this project, you will provide my students with resources they would otherwise not have access to--high interest books! Not only will you be broadening their perspectives with books that will open up new experiences and worlds for them, you are also securing that they will continue to grow in their literacy skills over the summer, preparing them for their journey to middle school.
