This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 7th grade mathematics as well as coach the girl's basketball team. My school is located in Missouri and its student population consists of 88% free and reduced lunch qualifiers. It is a high need community that services students from 23 different municipalities. The crime rate is relatively high and the students often bring neighborhood issues to school with them.
There are not enough adequate after-school programs for the students. All we have is boys basketball, tutoring, and cheerleading. Girls sports are primarily intramural.
I would like to expand the after school program by offering girls sports more permanently. We will begin with girls basketball and track and field then later move to other sports. We will need to purchase basketball equipment such as balls, coaching aids, ball racks, rims, etc.
Your gifts will be greatly appreciated by our female students who also need outlets to express themselves. It wont solve all of our schools problems but I believe it is a start in the right direction. They want something to work for and having a girls sports program will help them avoid the pitfalls of living in such a violent and unforgiving community. It truly does take a village to raise a child and your part in the process is greatly needed at this time.
