Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been in my public elementary school for seven years and in that time I have seen the numerous challenges our students face, specifically our female students. Many of our girls have very low self esteem, anger management issues, and difficulty expressing their thoughts and feelings. That is why

My students attend an elementary school in the Bronx with approximately 1200 students.

The girls I work with are in grades 3-5 (ages 8-11), and are of Hispanic and African American decent. The majority of my students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds. I have noticed that many of my female students have very low self esteem and few aspirations for the future. Many are too shy to speak up in class and ask for help. I created our girls group to become a mentor, helping to provide them with the tools they need to be confident assertive young ladies.

My Project

The counseling resources I have are very limited; many are from older resources and books. It is a challenge to engage students with older materials or repeated activities from the previous year. An iPad will enable us to hold our meetings anywhere in the building with the latest innovative group building techniques. It will enable us to have resources at our fingertips! I can envision the Girls Social Skills Club sitting in the school yard in a small circle enjoying the warm afternoon sun. I would seamlessly pull up an activity with our iPad to begin a discussion on self esteem and confidence building.

As a female who grew up close to our schools' neighborhood, I know how difficult it can be growing up feeling like your role models are limited.

It is an amazing feeling to sit in a small group with your peers and have others listen and relate to what you have to say. There is no greater feeling than feeling understood, validated, and special. I had a mentor who helped me pursue my dream of attending Columbia University and I hope to be able to share the gifts I learned with my students.
