Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with students from Washington Heights, New York. The same as in the musical, "In The Heights", that Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the music and lyrics for. A large percentage of our students live in shelters and call PS 28 their home. There is very little opportunity for creative freedom, when families are just trying to survive from day to day. Our families try very hard for so little, a lifestyle I hope you are not familiar with. When they come to school they are pumped to learn and I do whatever I can to support their learning.

My students are wonderful students who have a passion for learning, however I am specifically advocating for my fourth and fifth grade students who have shown an interest in learning an instrument and are willing to give up their recess periods, a few times per week to sit and begin to learn guitar.

This my fourth year with a guitar club and wish to expand it to more students. I am happy to give up my lunch period to them, but I need your help.

Musical training helps develop language and reasoning: Students who have early musical training will develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. ... Students learn to improve their work: Learning music promotes craftsmanship, and students learn to want to create good work instead of mediocre work.

Here is an article that describes exactly how music benefits students, but the truth is you know what music brings into your own life, and if you play, you know that to pick up an instrument is to hold onto a part of who you are, to be the reason for something beautiful, full of colors and shapes in your world. It's a source of pride and ownership that can help a child find her place.
