My Project

If I asked you to think back to who you were back in 5th grade, what words would you honestly use to describe yourself? Could you have used a supportive and uplifting group to be a part of, that could show you just how strong and capable you really were? My colleague and I, both runners, had known about the Girls on the Run nation-wide program for some time, and last year we were successful in completing the training to be Girls on the Run coaches, and were able to bring the program to our school. I cannot even begin to explain the transformation that we saw in our girls from week to week. Girls on the Run is not just a run program, there is a huge social-emotional component to it as well, including lessons on empathy, being a good friend, and activating your "star power". All of our Fall session participants completed a 5k race in our schoolyard (27 laps around the track!) while we cheered them on and celebrated with music and ice cream. Our spring 5k was beyond joyful - every girl completed her race, felt proud, had fun, and talked endlessly about how it was the BEST DAY EVER and how they can't wait to join again this year. Cut to this year, and the insane budget cuts that NYC public schools are facing. I'm not going to lie - getting the funds for our site fee last year wasn't easy, even as we receive financial assistance from GOTR as the majority of our students qualify for free lunch. Please help us continue this successful program at our school.
