My Students

In addition to my work as a literacy specialist, I've received the charge of being the advisor for 12 incarcerated female students in September. I've had the opportunity to work with my girls already this summer, as their summer school teacher, and I've learned so much about them. All of my girls love to write, many of them already have a writer's notebook and some are anticipating creating one soon. They all have dreams of making it when they are released from our program.

My girls have been through many trial and tribulations, but they have come to discover a sweet truth and that is "Girls like us are destined to fly free." Each one of my girls is looking for the key to attaining success, but I see them struggle daily with their inability to love themselves past their mistakes.

I see them clinging and fighting each other while hoping that someone else will fight for them. Fight and love them past these moments of instability and self-doubt.

My girls would like us to think that they are tough and that life can't break them down, but many are broken and in need of rebuilding.

My Project

Being incarcerated takes away the hope for living a successful life from many of our students. These materials and books will help our incarcerated girls see their value and their ability to seek the art that lives within them and they will display it for the world to see and marvel over it. They will read about other girls like them who made it and they will write their own stories in their writer's notebooks after decorating them. They will use their pen as their weapon of choice and will learn the importance of self-love, self-care, and working together as young women.

Every time they look at their writer's notebook they will see the power of creation that lives within them.

They will become empowered women who, even though are incarcerated for the moment, will become truly free. Their stories will be published in our yearly anthology and their essence will reign for other young women to be inspired and supported through their own journey towards change and success.
