Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Our urban elementary school has a very diverse student population and is identified as a Title 1 school. We have well over 1000 students and growing larger each year. Many of our students do not have opportunities to have hands-on experiences, nor do they have the means to explore the many career choices that will be available to them.
I would like to welcome 5th grade girls to join an after school science club, "Girls in Pink Lab Coats," where they can build, question and explore STEM topics in a girl-friendly environment.
The students would greatly appreciate any support you can give.

My Project
Picture a group of girls, eagerly reaching for their pink lab coats and looking forward to staying after school for academics. That's the scenario we will have with your help. These girls have asked for a club where they can "do science" in a supportive, non-threatening atmosphere. Students will use their knowledge of open and closed circuits to assemble a working telegraph. Pink-jacketed girls will learn new skills as they set up a solar water heater and see how it works. Making topological maps and seeing how geography influences events such as flooding and earthquakes will lead to questioning where people live and how they can minimize property loss by changing locations or building stronger structures. Picture girls experimenting with levers and seeing that the distance from the fulcrum makes a difference.
The purpose of each of these investigations is to answer one of three questions: How can I make this better, Can this technology be applied in a different way, or What problem can I solve with this knowledge?
With a little time, a few supplies and a positive attitude, I want them to say "Yes I Can!"
