My Students

This school year will be the 8th for our Chick Lit Book Club. Over the years, we have read dozens of books and have had thousands of interesting conversations. This club is unique at our small, rural school. There are 6 adult members in our club and about 15 teenage girls. We meet once a month.

The girls in this book club are hugely diverse.

They are girls who would probably never meet and become friends if not for this club. They are from all walks of life, and bring a variety of perspectives to our group. We've had students at the top of their class, teen parents, athletes, and girls who just need someone to talk to. It is a supportive place where we talk about an array of topics that concern/ appeal to teenage girls. Often, we are joined by adults who serve as mentors to our teen girls. It is so positive and so influential. I love that we have kept this club alive for so many years. Unfortunately, the funding for the this group has all but dried up. We have raised some funds here and there, but need a few sets of books to keep our once-a-month reading schedule. These books would help us to meet for four months, or until we can raise additional funds to meet for the rest of the school year.

My Project

These four book titles cover a wide range of issues that teens face. They will help our girls (and the women in our group) to discuss issues of addiction, body image, family issues, and social problems. There is no way for us to know ahead of time which girls are struggling with these issues in their own lives, but we know from experience that the conversations we have in our little club allow girls to work through their own issues and ones that their friends or loved ones are dealing with. Each month, we meet for about two hours. We have snacks, discussion materials, and deep conversations. Many times, there have been great revelations about how they can approach a problem, or more information about where they can turn for additional help. It is incredible to think that there are girls who join our club as freshmen and leave as seniors, having spent four years reading books with us. Those last Chick Lit meetings are so emotional!

The girls in this club would not be able to have amazing conversations and connections with adults without your support.

There is no other avenue for this type of club or interest in our school. We have a high level of poverty in our rural school district, and many of the girls in our club do not have the resources available to obtain books like these on their own. They are so appreciative of help and are so excited when others across the country support their reading efforts.
