Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching in a low-income high school in Harlem, NY comes with a little bit of heartbreak and a lot of reward. Low-income urban school districts are constantly under fire from the government, parents, and community members and teachers leave poor urban schools at a much higher rate due to a lack of resources.

I have been teaching Math in public high schools for nine years and very much enjoy working with students in the classroom.

However, my most favorite thing to do in the school building is coach volleyball. I am currently coaching the Girls Junior Varsity Volleyball Team, a team meant for 9th and 10th graders to learn the fundamentals of the sport, build technique, and compete in the Athletic League. Coming from the pandemic, none of my student athletes have been around their classmates for almost two years. They are eager to be a part of a team, learn technique and fall even more in love with volleyball!

My Project

When students returned to school this year after the COVID-19 pandemic, students were eager for social interaction with their peers. They wanted to make friends, join clubs and teams and just return back to normal adolescence. Being new to this school, I quickly learned that we had a Varsity volleyball coach, but didn't have a coach for the Junior Varsity team, and there were about 40 girls who wanted to try out. I joined as the coach and it has been nothing but rewarding!

However, coaching has had its fair share of challenges.

Our team of 25 girls is sharing the gym with the varsity team so we do not have our own volleyball net, volleyballs and volleyball cart for practice. These essential items will put my team on the same playing field as the other schools in the league and give us a chance to grow our program, but most importantly, grow every girl's skill set and love for volleyball!
