Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a low-income middle school in Ridgewood, NY. We have an after school program where children can stay at school for clubs and homework help free of charge, 5 days a week until 5:30 pm. Although we get some financial support it often comes well after the program is scheduled to begin and quickly gets used. My self and another teacher Zory DeMartino, conduct an after school "girl empowerment" group one day a week. We provide a safe space for the girls to share and explore the variety of feelings and emotions that come with being a middle school girl. Over the past two years, we have been amazed to see the friendships and support system that has been established amongst girls that would probably never had even said hello to each other in the schoolyard or cafeteria. We conduct group conversations on body image, self-esteem, diversity, acceptance and a wide range of topics while making crafts, cooking and organizing volunteer projects I am asking for $500.00 to purchase art supplies, craft materials and snack for the girls.

My Project

Our program provides the girls with a safe place to explore new friendships and an opportunity to learn more about themselves and others. Having these discussions while making fun crafts sets the girls at ease and enables them to open up. They help each other in areas of strengths and weaknesses. It's wonderful to see girls from different backgrounds come together and produce beautiful objects to take home and remind them of the important things that were discussed.

The girls have had the opportunity to make gifts for family members, friends and themselves that they would not have been able to do without our program.
