Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Remember how affirming and exciting it was to discover a new character, poem, or story that helped your understand yourself? The characters in stories can inspire all of us to know ourselves in new ways. I believe young girls need to read stories about girls their own age by girls their own age. I teach fourth graders in Central Falls, RI, where all of my class lives at or below the federal poverty line. This year 12 of my 20 students are bright, curious nine- and ten-year old girls. I want my girls to read writing by other girls their age. The best publication I've found for girls is New Moon® The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams. New Moon Magazine has an editorial board that includes girls ages 8-14, and girls' opinions and ideas resonate throughout magazine. New Moon is advertising-free and publishes fiction, poetry, artwork and letters written by girls for girls. (Note: One-fourth of New Moon's content is written by adults.) Award-winning articles about the lives of girls and women around the globe have been published in New Moon. Please help me bring New Moon Magazine into my classroom, along with some of chapter books that include strong female characters. I know my students will benefit tremendously by reading about positive female role models, both their age and even a little older. And perhaps some of them will even submit their own work to be considered for publication (Note: Four of my former students have been published in New Moon, so this is a distinct possibility). Thank you, in advance, for helping my girls shoot for the moon.
