Help Mr. E.

Girls are rock stars too! I teach twenty third to fifth grade students in the inner-city. I started a guitar program last year for underprivileged students who are subject to negative influences. These kids try very hard despite being affected by gang violence, drug abuse, unstable home lives, and little encouragement to go to college. Last year we had around four girls who were interested in guitars, but we did not have any. This year, ten of our students are girls, and we need to excite them about playing the electric guitar. These students in our program are mostly first generation immigrants of Latino heritage, and twenty percent is of African American heritage. We have no music program at our school, and guitar is probably the first instrument these kids have touched. I would like to inspire the girls in my class to write songs, play lead guitar, and have them take center stage.

These students need an electric guitar that is specifically for girls. Guitar and music in general encourages boys to play, take center stage, and play lead guitar. A lot of girls are becoming musicians now, and I want to encourage the girls in my guitar class so that it is equal and fair. I have had to spend my own money to fix guitars and bring my own guitars and amps in for the students. I do not have the money to buy a guitar that excites the girls' imagination. I need a motivator. We need your help to encourage these kids to become the next Avril Lavigne, Sheryl Crow, and the Veronicas.

The girls are beginning to take part. They are excited to play. One of the girls has showed interested in playing bass. All of the girls come twice a week and play their hearts out. When we perform in front of the school, we want everyone to shine, but we want to also prove that girls deserve equal treatment in guitar. My motto is: anyone can rock if they try hard enough and they have the right equipment. I don't want just the boys to shine and get attention; the girls need to have a guitar that is theirs that they can play, and then they can say, "We are important".

Your help will ensure that these students will not be without music or inspiration. Your help will show that equality matters, even today. In schools across the country, gender lines are being drawn all the time in sports, music, and academics. Your generous gift will give girls the opportunity to break those gender barriers and prove that they are an equal part of the band. Your gift will make my work with my guitar band truly successful. Thank you.
