My Students

Richard Skemp said, "Math needs to be taught so 95% is understood and 5% memorized." This is what we are trying to achieve in our classroom. So many of my students come to me with only surface knowledge of how numbers work; my goal is that they leave me with a deep understanding.

Despite the hardships they face outside of our school, my 4th grade math students are smart, eager, and ready for a challenge.

We are a Title I school where nearly every student receives free breakfast as well as free lunch. Many of our students are given weekly food bags to take home to get them through the weekend. Our assessment data has shown great gains with our students over the last 2 school years, and I want to continue that momentum and help my students discover their full potential.

My Project

Children need a concrete foundation of numbers before they can move on to the abstract concepts of numbers. My students need 15 sets of fraction equivalency cubes and 10 abaci to assist them in learning to visualize the quantity of numbers. These materials will allow me to give my students a hands-on perspective of the quantity of numbers relative to other numbers which will teach them to visualize quantities as they move into more abstract concepts. With an abacus, a child can easily see and manipulate quantities of numbers up to 100 and learn how to quickly and efficiently add and subtract using mental math. The fraction equivalency cubes will help my students convert mixed numbers to fractions and allow them to see equivalent fractions in a hands-on, easily manipulated way.

This project will impact the lives of approximately 60 students each day.
