My Students

The students at our school come from everywhere. From Albania to the Dominican Republic and everywhere in between, they cross oceans and continents to find themselves in our classrooms in New York City. They are bright, diverse, fierce, proud and they are hungry for opportunity.

As a result of the pandemic and remote learning, many of our students have returned to in-person learning far below grade level in math and reading.

They struggle with learning and behavioral disabilities, traveling from communities that may commonly experience violence or crime, or from single parent households, and they are seeking stability, safety, and rich learning experiences in our classrooms.

Our students are eager to experience success. It's up to our school's team of educators, counselors, administrators and other school staff to provide the tools, materials and other supports necessary for each young person to reach their full potential.

My Project

Our students are thrilled to be back to in-person learning, especially in a space where they can apply their skills to the history they have been living through for the last two years or so! However, their skills are lagging behind in certain areas, from academic to executive functioning. These resources will help students to establish and maintain effective study skills by developing close reading skills with the support of highlighters and sticky notes that enable them to capture key ideas and record important findings or questions they develop. This will also allow them to deeply analyze primary and secondary sources in the classroom.

Many students have study skills that have gotten a bit rusty during remote learning, and the flashcards will allow for them to refine these skills as they develop and maintain flashcard sets for each unit that are used in preparation for assessments.
