Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"For the first half of geological time our ancestors were bacteria. Most creatures still are bacteria, and each one of our trillions of cells is a colony of bacteria." This quote is taken from evolutionary biologist, Richard Dawkins. Last year my students became fascinated with studying the microbiological world of bacteria and other microorganisms under our digital microscopes that we generously received from a previous donors choose grant. I teach 6th-8th grade students science at a low-income inner city public elementary school. Over 87% of our students receive free or reduced lunch and I want them to continue to be on an even playing field with more affluent suburban school students in terms of access to highly engaging science classroom materials and activities. Unfortunately, our school has recently had to financially cut our science budget, among other areas as well. This proposal is seeking various bacteria exploratory kits so that my students can continue to learn through inquiry about the hidden world of microbiology. The kits will allow them to collect bacteria samples from different environments, and to explore the affects of soaps, mouthwash, disinfectants, and antibiotics on bacteria growth. They will even get to investigate how bacteria affects agriculture by causing cancerous tumors on plants. My students will undoubtedly learn biology in a more enthusiastic and relevant manner with these kits. This will then allow them to acquire more skills that will transfer into more interesting science fair projects, and hopefully will be just the right catalyst for encouraging some of them to pursue careers in biology or medicine in the years ahead. By helping to fund this proposal, you will help even the playing field in science learning between urban minority students and those from more affluent suburban areas. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
