Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students work hard, even if they struggle. They are kind to each other and understand that there are some in the classroom with special needs. More than 90% of my students are living in poverty, and yet they will still donate spare change to any fundraisers that help the sick or the needy.

My students deserve the best education possible, which is hard to get with the way our school budget has been so severely cut.

I want them to know that I believe in them and in all of their potential and will find a way to get the supplies that they need even when the budget won't allow for it. They deserve to have a classroom that feels comfortable, safe, and like a home. We are like a family in my classroom. My students know that I take care of them.

My Project

These materials will make a big difference in my students' learning. Currently, we only have a few tablets and laptops and students have to share them or wait for their turn, which could be a few days. Generally, the technology goes to the struggling learners primarily, since they are not as independent as others. However, it is viewed as being unfair to other students who want to be challenged and engaged with online activities as well. They are right. That is unfair. I would love to have the technology for all of my students to use by themselves every day to enhance what they are already learning or what skills they are practicing.

There are many online programs that have stories that are read out loud, and the laptops will give my students access to that to help them become better readers.

In my class, there are a few students with reading disabilities. Their disabilities make it hard for them to stay focused while reading independently. Unfortunately, I am the only teacher in the classroom and the budget does not allow me to have a teacher's assistant to work with students in small groups or independently. I am unable to only work with my struggling readers. I have to be made available to work with my top and average readers to challenge them and make grow to the next level. The online programs can be a substitute for an adult working with my struggling students and help them grow as readers.

Since my students are young and using the mouse pad on the laptop with their fingers can be difficult, a portable mouse can be used as an alternative.
