Getting Tech-Ie During This Pandemic

Help me give my students the technology to succeed during this Pandemic. An iPad would enable me to use technology to interactively engage with my students through apps, screen sharing and video conferencing.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Sitting down and listening to the teacher is something we are very familiar with; however, it is very different for a special needs child. Simple writing activities are often the most difficult task for a child with special needs to complete. A special needs child requires increased attention and prompting that is difficult to provide with technology. Most special needs students are not receiving all the necessary services in the way they were used to. Their overall progress is being greatly impaired due to this pandemic. Servicing special needs children requires us to think outside the box and provide learning opportunities that are not your standard pencil to paper task. Because of this, I find it difficult to reach out to my students because of the limited technology and space in my house. I would like to get up and explore objects and play games; however, due to using a desktop computer, I am limited to my dining room table.

My Project

At school, we are able to provide hands on assistance when completing classroom assignments that require pencil and paper. Due to social distancing and the use of technology, these techniques are not available. It is also difficult to provide writing strategies with outdated technology and limited space to complete any activity. As a teacher, it is imperative that we continue to address writing concerns while using technology as our main method of communicating with children. Right now, writing is limited as all homework is completed on the computer or programs only require use of a mouse to complete the learning requirement. Because of this handwriting is not going to be an area of concern for the teachers and parents are so overwhelmed that they are doing what they need to do to get through this time.

With the assistance of interactive technology that an iPad offers, I can address the underlying skills that are needed to complete writing activities, which are currently being neglected.

There are a variety of applications, such as "writing wizard" which will allow me to work on foundation skills needed to make handwriting legible. Right now, technology is currently the main source of education; however, handwriting is important and will continue to be important as we transition back to "normal" education when we return to school in the Fall.
