My Students

Our small K-6 public school is over 40 years old, close to two military bases and many of my wonderful students are deemed at-risk. All of them qualify for free breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. As a result, we lack the resources and opportunities of other schools in our area.

I am the librarian in a small public school and I work with wonderful kids---okay, I admit that I am predjuiced in their favor.

Although my students represent the very best in America, they don't have the funds for school supplies, books or field trip fees, but they still want to learn.

My student population is racially and ethnically diverse. It is 39% Anglo; 14% African-American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. 20% of our students are in bilingual/ELL programs, Indian Education or SPED programs. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, as well as Natives from rural Alaska.

My students want to be successful but they desperately need help. Every day they fall further behind. They are falling into an unfair lack-gap because our school lacks the budget to support them.

My Project

I am requesting new Babymouse, Hank the Cowdog books and the missing books from popular series like Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang and the Dark is Rising. We have copies of the older titles in these popular series but my kids are now demanding the latest books. I need more books that will appeal to my reluctant nonreaders. These new high interest series books will: 1) give my students an opportunity to find something interesting to read; 2) help them improve their self-esteem; and 3) encourage them to talk about their exciting books. When you read and discuss together, you learn that everyone has strengths. Reading builds a sense of community. Our library is over 40 years old and needs many things but I want to make it into the kind of place where students want to come and work. I have seen a ReadBook center on Pinterest. I plan to have my library club paint a shelving unit red and decorate it so that students can find these new books. In order to get started I need these new books.

Many of my students are reluctant readers who read way below their grade level.

As a result of their poor skills, they are teased when they have to read out loud or have to do a book report. I am always trying to help them find something to read.

I need a variety of new series books with enticing covers that will grab their attention. My library has essentially no money for new books. We need the help of donors and DonorsChoose.
