My Students

My students thrive on a combination of structure and independent work. The "Create Your Own Calendars" directly impacts on both of these elements. The structure inherent in the months and days of the year is one they must follow; yet, they have the freedom to indicate the date in their own way.

My students are a vibrant group of second grade students who love math.

They are a group of gifted and talented students whose learning styles are as diverse as they are. They thrive on challenges and mastering new material and new ways of showing their knowledge. They enjoy each others company and also like arts and crafts.

My Project

On the first school day of each month, we pause and reflect on the past month and set goals for the upcoming month. Each students sets their own goals, detailing what they would like to achieve in the coming month. We also create individual calendars of each month. We discuss upcoming events, trips and celebrations. We discuss how many days in the month and when it begins and ends. The students then complete the calendar using everything they know about math. They use many different ways to show the date.Tally marks, multiplication sentences, pictographs, addition and subtraction sentences, all find their way onto these calendars. They also illustrate the highlights of the upcoming month.

These calendars provide a way for the students to document their growth in math and the way they look at it.

Different math strategies become apparent as the year progresses. I have heard from past students that they still have these calendars many years later!
