Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember when you first learned to love reading? It was probably because you were reading a book that you were interested in and wanted to learn more. Our students need a variety of age-appropriate, interesting texts in order to jump start their lifelong love of reading.

Our students are in grades kindergarten through 2nd grade.

They all have special needs, including but not limited to, autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and behavioral disorders. They are an amazing group of students who love coming to school and learning. Our school is in it's first year of existence in the Bronx, NY and we have a hard-working, energetic staff, most of whom are in their first few years of teaching. Classroom library supplies are limited, but our teachers go above and beyond to make sure that their students have access to the best materials possible. Many of our students are early-emergent readers, meaning they are just starting to show interest in text and what text could mean to them. With access to high-interest and engaging literature, their interest in reading and literacy will only grow and grow.

My Project

As the literacy coach, teachers will be able to check out the materials from me that are appropriate for their particular unit or lesson. Teachers will use the books to lead small groups, teach whole group read-alouds, and teach reading and text recognition strategies to their students. With these materials, students will learn the value of interest-based literature and will begin to see texts as a tool for fun and engagement.

Please help to give our students a love of reading.

The teachers that I work with are incredibly hardworking and are doing everything possible to provide the best education to their students with special needs. By donating, you will be expanding a child's word and allow them to explore and engage with new and exciting ideas. Thank you!!
