My Students

My students are kindergarten-second grade students (5-8 years old) in a special education classroom in Harlem, New York. All of my students have very specific learning and emotional needs which requires additional support in school. They are enthusiastic, silly, loving, and challenging.

My Project

As we get ready to reopen schools, it is important that students will have individualized materials to keep us all safe and healthy. Budgets to purchase supplies have been cut for both teachers personally and schools in general. I am looking to help my students organize their supplies and keep us all safe.

If the decision to go to a fully remote teaching model needs to be made again, students will be able to easily take their supplies with them to continue learning from home.

At this point in time, New York City is still planning to have children returning to the classroom part-time and learning from home part-time.

I work with an entirely special education population and remaining organized is essential to supporting students in learning and their social-emotional health. The items in my project will make sure each student has a new and separate set of supplies to use while they are at school in a container that can be easily cleaned and managed. We are also receiving word that students will not be able to bring in their own supplies from home so I have included basic needs including pencils and crayons that can be used during daily lessons.

This project also includes headphones that are specially made for children and will optimize their focus and comfort when using technology at school or when participating in remote learning activities at home. In the past, we have used adult-sized headphones that are uncomfortable, fall off the children, and are easily broken. Our curriculum at school includes daily digital activities using online reading resources and an online reading and math skills program called i-Ready. These headphones will bring needed comfort to make sure students can complete their lessons and also ensure they have their own pair.
