This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The school year has started, and my class is already eager to get their hands on learning basic reading, writing, and math skills! I want to provide my students with engaging, fun materials that will motivate them to be active participants during lessons. This will help foster a love for learning.

My classroom this year is full of 25 energetic first graders.

I want to motivate my students to have fun this year as they fall in love with reading, writing, and mathematics. My students are from Los Angeles, California. Our school is a Title I school with 97% of students receiving free or reduced-rate lunch. Many of my students come from impoverished backgrounds and do not have access to learning materials at home. Our school's mission is to "To empower, prepare, and inspire urban students to achieve their highest potential and become active citizens who work toward building a more just, humane, and sustainable world by providing a democratic arts-enriched and nurturing school environment." My ideal classroom environment would embody this mission statement. Unfortunately, sometimes it is hard to get my hands on all the materials and resources I would like for my classroom and students.

My Project

My students will be utilizing many of these materials on a daily basis during small and whole-group instruction. They will use the "Write & Wipe" number lines and math boards daily in order to build early numeracy, basic math skills, and fluency. Students will also use the "Read-Along Pointers" and "Reading Trackers" during daily instruction in order to promote one-to-one correspondence, prosody, and fluency in reading. I will use the jumbo magnetic ten-frames and the magnetic base ten set during math lessons in order to provide children with concrete representations of critical math concepts. Concrete, physical models help children represent their thinking about complex math concepts. The remaining materials (magnetic letters, math activities, sight-word bingo, phonics puzzles, and reading/writing learning centers) will be utilized during math centers or literacy stations. This is a time of the day when children practice literacy and math skills in rotating small groups.

I believe that these materials will foster a more engaging and hands-on learning environment.

I hope that my students will discover that math, reading, and writing can be fun! All materials are handpicked to build students' early literacy and basic math skills. I hope this project will improve my students' lives by providing them with a strong foundation so that they will develop into successful readers, writers, and mathematicians. My first-graders will discover how fun learning can be!
