My Students

This is my third year at an amazing community school, in Brooklyn, NY. I use the word community, because they have an amazing philosophy of making sure the teachers, parents, and community are all connected to ensure a safe and successful learning environment. The school offers many enrichment programs and is incorporating project based learning in the everyday instruction. We are lucky to have a diverse school and classroom with students from many different backgrounds.

This year, I hope to help them push my 1st graders' thinking, and give them an opportunity to discover new things around them by having hands-on experiences in Science and Social Studies.

The class is a Gifted and Talented class, and we have many academic and creative talents. Their passion for learning drives projects that we work on throughout the year. These students have a love for reading, and enjoy taking GoNoodle dance breaks. This new group of 28 very curious 1st graders, are hardworking and always ask questions that push my thinking. I am excited to see where this year takes us!

My Project

In our classroom we try to put an emphasis on both Social Studies and Science. As a first grade we do an unit on artifacts. To go further in the G&T classroom we read and learn about Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. After learning about hieroglyphs, and how Egyptians wrote, we will be rolling out our own clay tablets and carving our names out in them in hieroglyphics.

We bring learning to life through project based learning.

Another project our class will be completing is, Earth: Inside and Out. In this unit we have an opportunity to learn about the layers of the Earth, and the materials in the layers. We have an opportunity to talk about the shifting of the tectonic plates, and complete a fun project involving graham crackers and icing. In addition we learn about how different types of rocks, minerals, fossils, and geodes are formed. The kits I am requesting will help increase interest and allow students to have hands on experience.
