My Students

When you walk into my first grade classroom, you will see a group of independent learners. They know what they should be learning, what to do when they're done, what to do if a pencil breaks or they accidentally rip a piece of paper without asking the teacher. Independence is the key to success!

The 24 first graders in my classroom come from a range of backgrounds.

They are a diverse bunch of students at the beginning of their school career, and each morning they enter my classroom excited about what they might learn that day. About 40% of the students in our school receive free or reduced price lunch, and 20% are English Language Learners. Many of these students come from homes that lack structure and organization. It is up to me to teach them the skills of independence necessary to be successful for the rest of their school lives.

My Project

In order to foster the independence necessary for successful learning, students need a classroom that is organized. They need a space that does not feel cluttered, messy, or overwhelming. They need easy access to supplies and materials such as pencils, crayons, scissors, and glue sticks. They also need a place to quickly put away their work that allows them to keep it organized and easily find it again. The table top organizers will give students a shared space to keep their daily supplies. There will be no more messy pencil boxes taking up extra work space on the table. The chair pockets I requested will provide students with a place, right at their table where they can keep their reading, writing, math, and science folders. This will reduce the back-up at our current cubbies during clean-up time and also limit the number of trips across the room. I foresee these chair pockets cutting our "transition" times in half--which means more time for learning!

Keeping table areas more organized will reduce the amount of time spent cleaning up, organizing work, and looking for sharp pencils, scissors, and glue sticks.

Less time spent on these avoidable tasks means more time spent on the most important thing: learning!
