Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are digital natives living in a technologically driven world. A serious challenge in our media center is our lack of digital resources. Many students aptly "shut off" upon entering the library. We want to turn them on to reading with Nooks and E-books.

We are a campus library that serves three unique schools in New York.

Our school library serves Title I schools with over 80% of the student population qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Our students are inquisitive and eager 6th-12th graders that come from a community that has severe socio-economic challenges. While we live in a digital age our students do not have access to digital media and technology. As digital natives, our students must be taught to integrate technology with literature. Unfortunately, our lack of digital media makes it virtually impossible for our students to begin fusing their love of technology with literature.

My Project

Turning on the two Nooks requested and reading the latest fiction or non-fiction titles from the New York Public Library would be a vast change of pace for students that only see these devices in stores, but have previously been unable to access them. We can have Nook book reading groups as well as Nook book online recommendations and reviews. Our students will be enticed with the technology aspect of the nook, but will forever be hooked on the concept of reading.

This is an exciting time to be a reader and learner.

There are so many new and innovative ways to reach our students. The idea, and soon to be reality, of having these Nooks opens up a world of possibilities and excitement for our students. Help us help these youngsters bridge the digital divide so many of them face by giving them a chance to experience the world of reading with a Nook.
