My Students

Sitting still is overrated. In our classroom, I try to break content down so that it is more hands-on and easy for my students to understand. In a typical day in our class, you might see my students working on a variety of things...all at once. They might be up moving around because learning is doing.

My students are an energetic group of third graders.

Our school is high-poverty and eighteen of my twenty-one students qualify for free or reduced lunch. My students learn best by getting hands-on with content and they are so eager to learn. My students absolutely love school and come to school excited to learn something new each day. Math can sometimes be overwhelming for them, though, especially because the content can seem so abstract.

My Project

I teach math in small groups. If you were to walk into my classroom during our math time, you might see my students working on a variety of skills...all at once. You would see some students working in problem solving journals, others playing math games, others completing number hunts or math tasks around the room, and still another group working with me. To really get the most from these opportunities, my students need manipulatives to use. Many of my students have very little confidence in their own math ability, especially because much of what we learn in 3rd grade can seem so abstract. Imagine trying to visualize what a fraction is without being able to manipulate objects and see how smaller pieces can combine together to make a whole. The variety of math manipulatives I am requesting can be used in my math small groups and centers as well as whole-class lessons so my students can have hands-on opportunities with these concepts.

Currently, our grade level shares a small collection of manipulatives and sometimes they simply cannot make their way around to each class.

Having our own set will allow my students to work hands-on with math on a daily basis. They will be able to break down abstract concepts into something more concrete and easy to understand. This will give my students more confidence in their own math abilities.
