Help Mrs. Jackson

I am a kindergarten teacher at a low-income school with a extremely high ESL population that continues growing. The best way to teach science, especially to ESL students, is to let them come up with the scientific questions and figure out the answers on their own. In Inquiry science, students are encouraged to explore their science questions to find answers. We can use all moments as teaching moments. Let's say for example one of my students wants to know if lady bugs have eyes. We could go find a lady bug and put it under the microscope or use magnifying glasses to view it. Starting students off first thing in kindergarten, when they have the need to know "why" about everything, with inquiry science, helps build a love for science and problem solving skills. The problem is that most school money is spent on math and reading so my science supplies are limited. I would like your help in buying a science discovery kit that includes wide variety of resources to perform different science experiments included in the kit. It also can be used in a science center to answer scientific questions that students come up with. I also need your help in buying tornado tubes, a microscope, and magnifiers for the whole class. These are science tools that the children enjoyed using the most in my kindergarten class last year. An example of a lesson we use these materials in is our earthworm study. The students are given worms in dirty to observe. They use the magnifiers, microscope, rulers, and other science supplies to make observations about worms. Then me collect other bugs from outside and compare them to worms. We continue to do this for a whole month comparing different animals such as fish, tadpoles, chicks, and even goats. We use the tornado tubes to help us explore weather. Students keep a weather journal during a study we do on weather. We discuss all kinds of different forces of nature. We make wind socks and wind mills to study wind. We go out early in the morning and later in the afternoon to discover due and the effects sun has on it. We keep rain gages to study rain. We also use cotton and flash lights to study cloudiness. The students could use the tornado tubes to see what a tornado looks like and compare different tornado's. You could help us get down and dirty and find the answers to all those questions that are just driving us crazy with curiosity. You don't want to leave us curious do you? You know curiosity killed the cat.
