Getting Down and Dirty with Environmental Science- Sampling Local Waters

My students need dip nets, water testing kits, identification guides, and wading boots in order to sample local aquatic ecosystems and to catch, identify, and study local aquatic life in the freshwater ecosystems in our area.

My Students

Students at my school are artistically gifted and attend based on auditions for performing arts, visual arts, and writing. They are pulled from all across the district to attend our high school. They range from 9-12 grades, but most of the students in this class are upperclassmen.

Most of my students are tailoring their educational experiences to become college-ready, and 99% pursue a degree after high school.

Having a strong foundation in science provides them with the tools to be successful after high school.

Students at my school are passionate about their arts, their scholastic achievements, and the world around them. They care about the decisions that are made that affect them. They are interested in the environment, and take upper level courses to support those interests. This project will help foster a learning and understanding about the environment.

My Project

In AP Environmental Science, field studies are just as important as lab investigations. At my school, we have motivated students, but lack the materials for field exploration. The D-ring dip nets are excellent for sampling small macro-invertebrates in local waters. Additionally, dissolved oxygen levels are also an important indicator of aquatic ecosystem health.

For many of my students, this will be the first experience with field sampling and testing.

In order to use these materials appropriately, students need access to field guides and hip waders to enter the shallow waters and collect the necessary samples. These materials will provide them with this opportunity.
