Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This September as I start my third year teaching in Newark, I will be welcoming 25 fourth grade bilingual students into my classroom. All of my students are currently living in Newark, New Jersey, but they come from different countries in Central America and South America. Many of my students have left their countries and families behind, in attempts of following “the American Dream.” They are now faced with challenges such as language barriers, culture shock, and education gaps, but if you were to walk into my room, you would only see smiling, playful and eager to learn students. My kiddos are full of life, they’re hungry to learn, and despite their circumstances, they aspire to be the greatest versions of themselves. We are proud to be bilingual students, we take pride in where we come from, but most importantly the places we’re headed!

My Project

Providing my students with flexible seating will make them feel empowered by having a choice in where they can sit! My students will be able to MOVE which is extremely important for kids of a young age. With these chairs they will be able to wobble, rock, bounce and lean which (fun fact) increases oxygen flow to the brain helping their minds stay focused and on task. My students will feel comfortable which will help them find a calm spot to stay focused and be productive. Additionally it will help build a sense of community as we practice sharing.
