My Students

I teach 100 creative, energetic, and excited sixth grade students science each year. My students work hard and put their best effort forward every day. My students love hands-on activities and being able to talk and work through problems together. Our school is in southern Massachusetts and is an upper elementary school housing grades 4-6. The lower grades are typical elementary classrooms, where students stay with one teacher, but my students work on a middle school model and rotate classes all day.

My students love having the freedom to move about my classroom and thrive when they are not stuck at a desk all day.

I have found that allowing students the options to sit in comfortable chairs, or in locations around the room, they are better focused and can find a spot that works for them. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies including group work, flexible seating, and a variety of work assignments and assessments to best fit the students.

My Project

Flexible seating allows students to self-advocate, take charge, and make the best choices for themselves. During independent work, or group work, students can choose a place in the classroom that works best for them. Currently, I have 2 bean bag chairs and a bowl chair for students to choose from. We also have 6 yoga balls that are at the desks. Other students sit on the floor, move desks, sit on counter tops, or borrow my desk chair. Students grab clipboards or work on Chromebooks to complete their assignments. Groups will huddle around together sitting engaging at their own level rather than around a group of uncomfortable desks.

Flexible seating creates happier and more comfortable students, which has a dramatic increase on their motivation, understanding, and engagement.

Students almost always make good choices as to where they should sit. Students also can move if they feel they are not working as well as they should. Group work can be spread out around a space rather than being confined to the desk space. On different days, students can be found in different spots depending on their own moods or avoidance of distractions. Students have the freedom to make choices for themselves and take ownership of their own learning. Students also have the freedom to move around rather than being confined to desks.

The supplies I requested will allow my students to have more seating available. The items are lightweight and can easily be moved around the classroom.
